WORKSHOP ON SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Having had an experience of wide learning of the subject of materials management in the first semester syllabus, valuable light was thrown upon the supply chain management in healthcare and its interconnection with information technology. The 1 st year MBA-HHM students of SIHS attended this workshop on 26 th February 2018, which began with its 1 st session, the process of supply chain

management. This session witnessed a lecture by Col. Dr. Vijay Deshpande, who apart from being a previous faculty member happens to be an expert in the subject.

The 1 st year MBA-HHM students of SIHS attended this workshop on 26 th February 2018, which began with its 1 st session, the process of supply chain

management. This session witnessed a lecture by Col. Dr. Vijay Deshpande, who apart from being a previous faculty member happens to be an expert in the subject.

The second speaker for the day was Mr. Mohan Nair from the Indian Institute of Materials Management. Mr. Nair conducted a session on Key issues in healthcare supply chain management and enhancing supply provider relationship to cut down coats and improve quality.

The afternoon session started at 1.15 pm with the introduction of the speaker Mr. Mohan Nair. Mr. Nair started the talk by giving an introduction to supply chain management and his work experience in the industry. The main focus of his talk was the opportunities and challenges in supply chain management. He introduced the students to various concepts such as Just in time, Total quality management, supply chain cost, and demand chain management. He then gave the students an

exercise to give an estimate of the number of people involved in a supply chain to deliver a rice meal at a restaurant. This was done to give the students an idea about the expanse and importance of each component of the supply chain. Mr. Nair then spoke about the major challenges faced in India within the supply chain. These were namely poor infrastructure, inadequate technology, difficulty in managing scalability and shortage of skilled workers. He then went on to give examples of organisations with excellent supply chain management in India.

These were Amul, Haldirams condiments, Parle G biscuits, and ITC limited. This was then followed by a question answer session. The talk was concluded with a quote by the speaker which was “SCM is a philosophy, logistics is an enabler”.

Workshop on Internet of things (IoT) held on 25th January 2018

A workshop on Internet of things was conducted on 25 th January 2018, Thursday .Internet of Things is becoming the necessity of time and a basic requirement for any organization and thus it is essential for students and budding Managers to learn the basic fundamentals of IOT and apply the same in their organizations while dealing with practical problem.

Session 1 - The session started at 9:30 am with an inspiring quote on internet by Miss Vanshika Sengar and introduction of first speaker Mr Rajesh Vartak. The topic of the session was cracking the code of generation next information. As we were all new to the topic he started with the basics of internet, how automation/programming has become a fourth language, Gartner technologies 2016, Technology growth, invention of JAVA and future technologies like SMAC .He explained how merger of the two that is physical world (sensor) and digital world (SMAC) lead to Internet of Things. We were also taught about the stories of analytics, Machine learning andDeep learning.After the basic introduction we were then explained about what is IOT, future of IOT i.e. IOT preparations in 2020, layers of IOT, what is an IOT device, emotional internet of things and components of IOT. The session ended with a video on how oracle IOT upgraded a car racing game to a real life experience.

Session 2- The second session started at 1135 hrs and was conducted by Mr Harish Rijhwani. The topic of the session was Impact of IOT on Healthcare vertical. He taught us about the three square market, what can IOT connect to, he showed us a video on social web of things, how IOT can help from appointment in a healthcare centre, bed management,Medication control,Management of room temperature and tracking of hand hygiene compliance and patients with the help of RFID. He emphasized on the use of IOT for sensors for points of care and ICD which helps in medical transcription, coding and billing. He cited the example of organization like Ohio Health, Apollo Hospital,Chennai and Manipal Bengaluru which are using IOT for efficient running. He ended the session with challenges in implementing IOT in healthcare and how do IT companies play a role in its development, integration and R&D which was followed by a lunch break.

Session 3- The final session for the day started post lunch at 1400 hrs. The session was conducted by Dr.Neelesh Kumbhojkar. It was an interactive session with Dr. Kumbhojkar asking the students multiple questions .The main focus of the talk was 'demystifying the technology trends in healthcare'. Dr Kumbhojkar started by talking about the current scenario, technology, market segmentation and latest happenings in the industry. He then went on to talk about the range of devices and growth talking place in the industry with  respect to internet of things. Later on he talked about the reasons for growth, expectations in the future and importance of developing skills in big data. The session was concluded after a discussion on various career opportunities in the sector for the MBA-HHM students.

Hospital Finance Planning workshop held on 19th Jan 2018

HOSPITAL FINANCE PLANNING

As students we are always taught that “sky is the limit”. Symbiosis provides us with a platform to reach new heights. Keeping into mind the growth and development of an individual as a whole, SIHS conducted a workshop on 19th January 2018 on hospital financial planning. There was an array of speakers from renowned hospitals who enlightened us with various aspects of the finance in a hospital.

The first speaker was Col. SKM Rao, CEO, Jupiter Hospital, Baner. He spoke about the basic concepts of finance like profit and loss accounts, break even sales, break-even point etc. it provided us with an insight into the world of finance. Next we had Abhijit Dhumal and Mr.Avinash, customer care manager, Colombia Asia hospital, Pune. The session with them was exhilarating as they told us about the various procedures in billing and accounting of a patient when admitted in the hospital. They also spoke about the different packages that are designed for individual patients and executive packages. They shared some real- life situations where several issues regarding payment were of grave concern to the patient. The final speaker was Mr. Sunil Verma, Assistant Professor, AFMC, Pune. He spoke about the entire budget planning and how funds are raised in the public sector. His lecture changed our perception about the entire public sector.

All in all, the entire workshop was extremely educative and helped us to gain more information about the various aspects of finance and how is it dealt in the hospital. Such workshops always give us an opportunity to learn more about the industry and promote newer skills within us.

Akshay Kumar @ Symbiosis to talk about the "Cinema as a medium of social consciousness and cultural transformation"

On 15 th January 2017, Symbiosis Centre of Management Studies conducted a panel discussion on"Cinema as a medium of social consciousness and cultural transformation"    by the one and only Khiladi of the Bollywood –Mr. Akshay Kumar. 

Along with Mr.Akshay Kumar the others present for the discussion was Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar, Pro- Chancellor, Symbiosis International University, Dr. Ruchi Jaggi, Director, Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication, and Dr. Rajiv Yeravdekar, Dean and Faculty of Health and Biomedical Sciences, Symbiosis International University.

Here, Mr. Kumar started the session by talking about the aims to remove the stigma around periods. He believes that entertainment can normalize taboos in a way, other mediums cannot. He discussed that how women should not shy away from talking about the menstruation issue and certainly should not whisper about it, as it is as natural as having food and drinking water. Mr. Kumar also shared his experiences with the women while shooting for the movie, like various methods these women are using to manage their menstrual bleeding like ashes, mud, dirty clothes etc. and he also told us that 30% of rural women do not even know about the sanitary napkins.

He also slammed the Central government for levying 12% GST on sanitary napkins and said that instead women should get it for free as it is a basic necessity. He also made the session interactive by answering several questions from students regarding the movie.In the hour-long discussion session; Akshay was witty, funny, and honest. He spoke of his stand on being a part of socially-relevant films,

his interesting line-up of films in the last few years, and his fitness.

He also explained that how government cannot be blamed for everything, Akshay expressed, “We always blame the government. But what do we do? I stay on the beachside in Mumbai. So I make sure at least the 100-meter area in front of my house is clean. That’s what every citizen of India needs to do. It is about time we did things ourselves and only then we will see a change.”

In between the session, the Ambassador of Gambia, Jainaba Jagne walked up and Mr.Akshay invited her to join him on the dais. Impressed by his work, she remarked, “The message that he is trying to send out is a problem for every lady across the world. It’s a natural phenomenon, which should actually be a part of everyday conversation.” And also she was generous enough to promise Akshay that she would love to screen Padman across theatres in Gambia.

At last he also shared the mantra behind his great physique- he sleeps at 9.30 p.m. and wakes up by 4a.m. In short, he has never missed a sunrise. And without fail he chants the Gayatri Mantra in the morning. Akshay is a family man. His parting words to us were: “Before stepping out of the house, I always touch my parents’ feet. Just do that because there’s some positive aura about it.” Through his speech he busted many myths regarding periods and emphasized on youth being country future and its role in spreading awareness among the country.
