1)    Evolution of HR
2)    Role of HR
3)    Need for HR analytics
4)    Algorithm that tells a boss who might quit
5)    HR analytics helps HR Management

Evolution of HR
Questions were asked to the students about HR to get a feedback about their knowledge on the topic. HR evolved in the year 1960. The 2nd reform took place in the mid 80’s. During the 3rd reform i.e. during the bubble burst there was a global crisis, to find out the root cause of failure of the companies productivity. That is when the HR evolved.

Role of HR
An HR Manager should abide by the following roles in an organisation:
1.     Recruitment
2.     Training
3.     Appraisal
4.     Maintain work culture
5.     Resolving conflicts
6.     Employee relations
7.     Rewards and Incentives
8.     Legal knowledge
9.     Payroll management

Need for HR Analytics
HR analytics, also called talent analytics, is the application of considerable data mining and business analytics techniques to human resources data. The goal of human resources analytics is to provide an organization with insights for effectively managing employees so that business goals can be reached quickly and efficiently. The challenge of human resources analytics is to identify what data should be captured and how to use the data to model and predict capabilities so the organization gets an optimal return on investment on its human capital. HR analytics does not only deal with gathering data on employee efficiency. Instead, it aims to provide insight into each process by gathering data and then using it to make relevant decisions about how to improve the processes.
One such is Talent analytics; which is more qualitative and is basically for processes from talent management like personal development, recruitment, succession planning, retention etc.
By definition, Big Data in HR refers to the use of the many data sources available to your organization, including those not traditionally thought of in HR; advanced analytic platforms; cloud based services; and visualization tools to evaluate and improve practices including talent acquisition, development, retention, and overall organizational performance.  This involves integrating and analysing internal metrics, external benchmarks, social media data, and government data to deliver a more informed solution to the business problem facing your organization.

HR analytics helps HR Management
HR plays an important role in business outcomes, and utilizing data provides a key advantage in terms of decision-making. Though analytics won’t solve every HR challenge, they can provide an understanding of business functions and help trained HR professionals develop plans that “ talent investments while effectively monitoring recruiting, development, engagement, productivity, accountability, retention and many other workplace initiatives,” according to leading workplace intelligence expert.
HR analytics aim to provide insight into how best to manage employees and reach business goals. Now that more businesses realize that data helps them hire and retain the right talent, companies are investing in HR analytics tools, along with trained professionals who understand how to mine and apply them. HR analytics can help businesses make smarter decisions.
Experts say the current trend toward HR analytics will continue to grow, with analytics playing a central role in talent acquisition, development, and operations.
How HR analytics shape the business
Data analytics in Human Resources is quickly becoming a new area of innovation and focus because of the insights it can provide around workforce management. Workforce analytics has emerged as the key avenue for HR to become a proactive force for managing human capital and strengthen business strategies.

Analytics is being looked to as a way to break down human behaviour into something that is easy to quantify and understand. That’s a big aspiration for any analytical model, and the gap between the goal and some returns has caused the industry to shift its focus to a goal of understanding.

Is business of business only business (Debate)
We resumed the session after a lunch break. The students were divided into two equal groups for a debate on the topic “Is business of business only business”. The students participated in the debate actively. It was an interactive session where madam could judge the students and she marked them depending on their response to the debate.
Benefits of HR analytics
HR analytics help organizations a great deal. One-way analytics make a company more successful is improved hiring decisions. With analytics, HR can make better choices based on historical data and easily derive the best candidate from that data. Another analytic that helps HR departments ensure a company is successful is good training. Every organization needs a training process and gaps in this process can lead to major problems and increase costs. HR analytics help organizations guarantee if employees are making full use of training opportunities.
Better insights are another HR analytic that helps companies become more successful. These insights about employees help shape strategies that boost morale, retention and engagement. Stable retention is another way HR analytics make a company great. It is important for a company to understand why employees leave and stay with the company. The HR department can use a variety of tools like employee satisfaction surveys, team assessments, exit interviews and stay interviews to determine the reasons employees enjoy their time with the company.
Conclusion
The session for the day ended at 4.30pm. The student were able to understand the HR related work but understanding the data procedures was a little difficult as most of the students have a medical background. Madam mailed us the link for the data to be installed in the student’s laptops for the next day’s session, and the students left the premises.

Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time by Jeff Sutherland.

SCRUM workshop was conducted for MBA HHM Students  by Mr. Rahul Kadri, Director,Kadri Consultants Architects & Planners.

According to  Jeff Sutherland  We live in a world that is broken. For those who believe that there must be a more efficient way for people to get things done, here from Scrum pioneer Jeff Sutherland is a brilliantly discursive, thought-provoking book about the management process that is changing the way we live.

In the future, historians may look back on human progress and draw a sharp line designating “before Scrum” and “after Scrum.”  Scrum is that ground-breaking.  It already drives most of the world’s top technology companies.  And now it’s starting to spread to every domain where people wrestle with complex projects.

If you’ve ever been startled by how fast the world is changing, Scrum is one of the reasons why. Productivity gains of as much as 1200% have been recorded, and there’s no more lucid – or compelling– explainer of Scrum and its bright promise than Jeff Sutherland, the man who put together the first Scrum team more than twenty years ago.

The thorny problem Jeff began tackling back then boils down to this: people are spectacularly bad at doing things quickly and efficiently. Best laid plans go up in smoke. Teams often work at cross purposes to each other. And when the pressure rises, unhappiness soars. Drawing on his experience as a West Point-educated fighter pilot, biometrics expert, early innovator of ATM technology, and V.P. of engineering or CTO at eleven different technology companies, Jeff began challenging those dysfunctional realities, looking  for solutions that would have global impact.

In this book you’ll journey to Scrum’s front lines where Jeff’s system of deep accountability, team interaction, and constant iterative improvement is, among other feats, bringing the FBI into the 21st century, perfecting the design of an affordable 140 mile per hour/100 mile per gallon car, helping NPR report fast-moving action in the Middle East, changing the way pharmacists interact with patients, reducing poverty in the Third World, and even helping people plan their weddings and accomplish weekend chores.

Woven with insights from martial arts, judicial decision making, advanced aerial combat, robotics, and many other disciplines, Scrum is consistently riveting. But the most important reason to read this book is that it may just help you achieve what others consider unachievable – whether it be inventing a trailblazing technology, devising a new system of education, pioneering a way to feed the hungry, or, closer to home, a building a foundation for your family to thrive and prosper

TRAINING SESSION ON PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT

The three day training session was held i.e13th,15th and 17th July 2015 for MBA-HHM batch 2015-17.
The sessions were taken by Miss Christine D.Patham who has a vast experience in marketing with many reputed companies, after which she moved  to work as an HRD trainer, which was a paradigm shift in her career. Here she realised that she wanted to do something more than just being in a desk job decided  to take her passion as a trainer . The sessions were based on various topics involving the overall personality development.

July-13th : PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT AND BRAND YOU!
This was first session , emphasis was on
Ø  Realisation and increased potential
Ø  Credibility,
Ø  Enhancing leadership role
Ø  Strengthening morality
Ø  Ethics for future.
The elevator pitch concept was the new idea of introduction we learnt, which helped us define ourselves in 60seconds in a short and crisp way, which can be used on meeting someone for the first time and also introduction.
This tool is well used in interviews where most of the time interview panel start with OK -
“ So please tell us some thing about you”
Second emphasis was on basic etiquettes of greeting
Ø  Firm hand shake,
Ø  conversing in a polite yet confident tone
Ø  Pitch of communication
Ø  Warm smile on our face
Ø  All this can make a lot of difference when we interact with someone.
In the second half she gave us the activity on imagination –
“Keeping our eyes closed and imagining the sky.”
After the beautiful imagination came the surprising meanings behind the visions which gave an insight to what our basic nature is.
The second activity was on the type of personality, various questions were put forward and the results stood for the different types of personalities according to the human psychology.
July 15th: COMMUNICATION SKILLS,DRESS SENSE,DINING ETIQUETTES AND STRESS MANAGEMENT.
The second session was held on 15h July, where we were told the importance of being a good listener and how we tend to misinterpret things by not paying attention or not being able to understand what a person says.
The emphasis of a word and how it changes the interpretation of an entire statement was something to wonder about!
The next topic she spoke of was the importance of having a good dressing sense.
Smart managers should not only talk smart but also look smart. The first impression which is created is always by what we wear and how we carry ourselves, examples of how appropriate clothing plays a major role in judging people and it should be according to the occasion.
Dining etiquettes was something which was one of the most interesting topics of the day, where she helped us know the American and British styles of dining using various cutlery and glasses too.
The second Half was about stress management where we were introduced to the terms “eustress” (positive stress”) and “distress” (negative stress). She explained how worrying about future and fear of repeating mistakes of the past can result in stress. We got encouraged for not regretting over the past and learning from mistakes by getting rid of our weakness.
This was followed by a series of stress awareness tests which helped us understand the reactions we give on certain situations and how satisfied we are from our profession and work.

The day ended with a very inspiring and indeed heart touching video of Nick Vujicic, who taught us the importance of life and that we should seize the day with beautiful memories and live each day with high spirits and joy.
July 17thTIME MANAGEMENT AND TEAM BUILDING.
The third and last day was on time management when we had been asked to imagine what we would do if we had Rs.86,400 with us.The class spent the next 5 minutes fantasizing about the huge amount of money,at the end of which we got to know that those were the number of seconds we had in a day and the things we chose to do with the money were the ways we chose to spend our entire day.A quick realisation of this fact followed a set of tests which gave us an insight of how much we value time and how we can manage our day better by changing a few things.
In the second half we were given the example of Steven Covey’s “90/10 Principle” which talks about how we can simplify our life by only changing our reactions to the situations, if not being able to stop them from happening.
This was followed by “Steven Covey’s Urgency Index” test which stood by the principle of “First Things First”.
After this she spoke of the Biorhythm or Biological Clock and said that everyone has their “peaks” and “troughs” of energy throughout the day. This was followed by a talk on-
Ø  Team building& team work help us understand the importance of team work
Ø  One leader in a team and team member are equally important
Ø  Role of co-ordination- important role in teamwork
Ø  Case study which ended the session.
Sessions like these are not only been informative, but also interactive where we learnt a lot of things which may not be a part of our academics, but are essential qualities which will help us transform fromMBA graduates into  “SMART MANAGERS”.
These are the values which we need to inculcate in ourselves that will make us responsible and reliable and through which we will understand how to prioritize things and deal with situations which will make us stronger and successful in every walk of life
“Through practicing and adopting them as a way of life.”
We, batch of MBA-HHM 2015-17 look forward to have more of such sessions which will help us grow beyond the bounds of our limitations and build our confidence.
